With diabetes it is important to get enough exercise and to watch what you eat. But what else can help? Alongside exercise and diet, medication, an insulin pen or a pump can offer support.

Tablets

Tablets can help lower your blood glucose level; metformin is the first choice. If your levels stay high, the advice is to switch to insulin. There are also medicines for blood pressure or cholesterol, especially with type 2 diabetes.

Insulin

If diet, exercise and tablets are not enough, you may be eligible for an insulin pen or pump. A pump continuously delivers small amounts of insulin. There are ultra-rapid-, short-, intermediate- and long-acting types of insulin, and combinations of these.

Sensor

A sensor measures your glucose continuously; the reading goes to an insulin pump or to your phone. Ask your GP or dietitian which treatment suits you best.
