Does this sound familiar?
Are you worried about your child's weight, growth or eating behaviour? A child who is overweight or underweight, has a poor appetite, stomach complaints or does a lot of sport needs different nutrition from an adult. And it is always about the whole family, never a diet for one child.
Who is this guidance for?
If you recognise yourself in one or more of these situations, a dietitian is a logical next step. Not sure? A single question by e-mail is answered free of charge.
- Your child is overweight, or the GP (huisarts) or school doctor has raised it
- Your child is not growing well, is underweight or eats very little
- Your child is a fussy eater, refuses vegetables or eats a very limited range of foods
- Your child has stomach complaints, constipation, a food allergy or intolerance
- Your child has type 1 diabetes or another condition in which nutrition plays a role
- Your child does a lot of sport or is in a sports academy and you want to know whether they are eating enough and well
What we do
- Intake together with parent(s) and child, in plain language and without judgement
- Growth chart, eating pattern and family habits mapped out; no strict diet
- Practical agreements for home, school and sport, with the whole family
- Coordination with the GP, youth doctor, paediatrician or school where that helps
How nutrition helps with nutrition for children and teenagers
With children we never look at weight alone. A child is growing, which means a healthy weight is always judged in relation to height and age. With overweight, the aim is usually not to lose weight but to keep weight stable while your child keeps growing. That is achieved with small, achievable changes in what and how the family eats, drinks and moves.
We work according to the guidelines of the Dutch dietetic profession and the Dutch youth health care (JGZ) guideline on overweight, and we build on what is on the table at home. Parents are the most important partner. With young children we mainly talk with you; with teenagers increasingly with the young person themselves, so they take ownership of their own choices.
For children and teenagers up to 18, dietary advice is completely free of charge: three hours per calendar year from the basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter and no deductible (eigen risico). With supplementary insurance, extra hours are often possible. If your child has a chronic condition, we coordinate with the GP or paediatrician.
What to expect from your programme
The aim is a child who grows healthily and enjoys eating, and parents who know what they can do without battles at the table. How fast that happens differs from child to child and from family to family. We track growth and weight at the reviews and adjust the plan together.
We make no promises about kilos or timelines. What we do is measure the same way at every evaluation, so you see your progress in black and white.

Is a dietitian for nutrition for children and teenagers covered?
Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. With supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more sessions. If you are over 18, your deductible (eigen risico) applies, except within an integrated care network (ketenzorg). We are contracted with all Dutch health insurers and bill them directly, so you receive no invoice.
Dietitian without a referral letter
For dietary advice you do not need a referral from your GP (huisarts): you sign up directly online and we get in touch within one working day. Only if you want to be guided within integrated care (ketenzorg), so that your deductible is not touched, does your GP request a referral. Where useful, we always coordinate with your GP or specialist.
Frequently asked questions about nutrition for children and teenagers
Is a dietitian for children really free in the Netherlands?
Yes. Up to the age of 18 no deductible (eigen risico) applies, so the three hours per calendar year from the basic health insurance cost you as a parent nothing. A referral letter is not needed either. With supplementary insurance, extra hours are often possible.
Does my child have to go on a diet?
No. With children we don't work with strict weight loss but with healthy growth: small, achievable changes for the whole family, so that weight grows in step with height.
From what age can my child see you?
From toddler age up to and including 17 years. With young children we mainly talk with the parents; with teenagers increasingly with the young person themselves.
Do you work together with the school, youth doctor or paediatrician?
Where that helps, yes, always in consultation with you. With a chronic condition such as type 1 diabetes we coordinate with the treating doctor.
Can I see a dietitian online in the Netherlands?
Yes. Online video consultations are covered in exactly the same way as an appointment at one of our locations, wherever you live in the Netherlands. You can also mix and match: the intake in Amsterdam or Almere, for example, and the follow-up sessions from home. Let us know your preference when you register.
