Weight & metabolic health · Amsterdam and Almere · no referral needed

Does this sound familiar?
You may have tried everything already: diets, apps, being strict with yourself. It works for a while, and then the weight comes back. Usually that is not your fault, but the fault of an approach that doesn't fit your everyday life.
Who is this guidance for?
If you recognise yourself in one or more of these situations, a dietitian is a logical next step. Not sure? A single question by e-mail is answered free of charge.
- You have a BMI of 25 or higher and want to lose weight healthily and for good
- You have tried several diets and recognise the yo-yo effect
- Your GP (huisarts) has advised you to lose weight because of your blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar
- You want to lose weight without giving up your own cuisine, culture or family meals
- You are preparing for an operation that requires weight loss first
What we do
- In-depth intake with measurement of weight and body fat percentage (and circumferences where useful)
- A personal nutrition plan that takes your preferences, culture and schedule into account
- Support with behaviour change: small steps that you can keep up
- Regular reviews in which we adjust the plan based on your results
How nutrition helps with weight loss and overweight
Overweight rarely has a single cause. Eating habits, sleep, stress, medication, hormones and genetics all play a part. That is why a standard diet usually only works for a while: it doesn't change the circumstances in which you eat. A registered dietitian looks at your whole day, from breakfast to the evening snack, and works with you on changes that fit the way you live.
We follow the guidelines of the Dutch dietetic profession and the Dutch treatment guideline for overweight and obesity in adults. Its focus is gradual, lasting weight loss, preserving muscle mass and paying attention to behaviour. That is why at every review we don't just weigh you, but also measure your body fat percentage and, where useful, circumferences: these often show progress before the scales do.
If you qualify for the Combined Lifestyle Intervention (GLI), we can guide you into that programme too. It is a two-year programme covering nutrition, exercise and behaviour, fully covered by insurance and without any deductible (eigen risico).
What to expect from your programme
The aim is a healthy weight that you maintain, not a quick number on the scales. How fast that happens differs from person to person and depends on your starting point, your health and what is realistic in your daily life. At every review you see in black and white how your weight and body fat percentage are developing, and we adjust the plan together.
We make no promises about kilos or timelines. What we do is measure the same way at every evaluation, so you see your progress in black and white.
How your programme works

at your pace
Is a dietitian for weight loss and overweight covered?
Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. With supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more sessions. If you are over 18, your deductible (eigen risico) applies, except within an integrated care network (ketenzorg). We are contracted with all Dutch health insurers and bill them directly, so you receive no invoice.
Dietitian without a referral letter
For dietary advice you do not need a referral from your GP (huisarts): you sign up directly online and we get in touch within one working day. Only if you want to be guided within integrated care (ketenzorg), so that your deductible is not touched, does your GP request a referral. Where useful, we always coordinate with your GP or specialist.
Frequently asked questions about weight loss and overweight
Do I have to follow a strict diet?
No. We work with a realistic way of eating that you can keep up. Little steps are the greatest: that is what we stand for.
How quickly will I see results?
That differs from person to person. We aim for lasting results: a gradual, healthy loss rather than a quick yo-yo effect. We take measurements at every review, so you can see your progress for yourself.
Is weight loss with a dietitian covered by Dutch health insurance?
Yes. Dietary advice for overweight is covered by the basic health insurance (basisverzekering): three hours per calendar year, with every Dutch insurer and without a referral letter. If you are over 18, your deductible (eigen risico) applies. If you qualify for the GLI, that programme is fully covered with no deductible at all.
How long does a weight-loss programme take?
Usually an intake and a few follow-up sessions spread over a number of months. An intake plus two follow-up sessions fit within the three covered hours; with supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more. You set the pace together with your dietitian.
Can I see a dietitian online in the Netherlands?
Yes. Online video consultations are covered in exactly the same way as an appointment at one of our locations, wherever you live in the Netherlands. You can also mix and match: the intake in Amsterdam or Almere, for example, and the follow-up sessions from home. Let us know your preference when you register.
