- You suffer from heartburn, reflux or a bloated feeling after eating
- You have chronic constipation or, on the contrary, diarrhoea without a clear cause

- You have a chronic bowel disease such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis and want dietary advice alongside your medical treatment

- A step-by-step approach, for example an elimination or low-FODMAP programme
- Advice for fatty liver, IBS, constipation and reflux complaints
- Coordination with your GP or gastroenterologist
How nutrition helps with stomach, bowel and liver complaints
Stomach, bowel and liver complaints often have several causes: what you eat, how and when you eat, stress, exercise and the sensitivity of your gut itself. That is why we start with a careful history of your diet and symptoms, often using a food and symptom diary. This reveals patterns you don't always notice yourself.
For IBS, a low-FODMAP programme can help: you temporarily leave out certain fermentable carbohydrates and then reintroduce them step by step, so you learn exactly which foods cause complaints. This is best done under supervision, because otherwise the diet becomes too restrictive. For reflux and stomach complaints we look at portion size, fat, coffee, alcohol and the timing of meals. For constipation it is all about fibre, fluids and movement.
Fatty liver disease is closely linked to overweight, sugar and alcohol. With a healthier eating pattern and weight loss, the amount of fat in the liver can decrease. We coordinate with your GP or gastroenterologist, so that the dietary advice fits with your tests and medication.
What to expect from your programme
The aim is fewer complaints and a better understanding of what your gut does and doesn't tolerate, without an eating pattern that is needlessly restrictive. At the end of a low-FODMAP programme you know exactly which foods to avoid and which are fine. For fatty liver we track your weight (and circumferences where useful) and go through your lab results with you.
We make no promises about kilos or timelines. What we do is measure the same way at every evaluation, so you see your progress in black and white.

Is a dietitian for stomach, bowel and liver complaints covered?
Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. With supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more sessions. If you are over 18, your deductible (eigen risico) applies, except within an integrated care network (ketenzorg). We are contracted with all Dutch health insurers and bill them directly, so you receive no invoice.
Dietitian without a referral letter
For dietary advice you do not need a referral from your GP (huisarts): you sign up directly online and we get in touch within one working day. Only if you want to be guided within integrated care (ketenzorg), so that your deductible is not touched, does your GP request a referral. Where useful, we always coordinate with your GP or specialist.
Frequently asked questions about stomach, bowel and liver complaints
Does the low-FODMAP diet work for IBS?
For a large proportion of people with irritable bowel syndrome it gives clear relief. It is an intensive programme, though, that is best done under the supervision of a dietitian.
Is a dietitian for IBS or stomach complaints covered by Dutch health insurance?
Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with every Dutch insurer and without a referral letter. A low-FODMAP programme usually fits within those hours; with supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more.
How long does a low-FODMAP programme take?
Usually six to eight weeks of elimination, followed by a few weeks of reintroduction. About three months in total, with sessions in between to adjust course.
Should I see my GP first?
Not for dietary advice. It is sensible, though, for your GP (huisarts) to rule out other causes if you have persistent abdominal complaints, especially with blood loss, unintentional weight loss or symptoms at night. Where needed we coordinate with your GP or gastroenterologist.
Can I see a dietitian online in the Netherlands?
Yes. Online video consultations are covered in exactly the same way as an appointment at one of our locations, wherever you live in the Netherlands. You can also mix and match: the intake in Amsterdam or Almere, for example, and the follow-up sessions from home. Let us know your preference when you register.

We experienced the guidance as very pleasant and personal.
My mother had lost a lot of weight due to health problems and was struggling to regain her strength. Thanks to the dietitian's excellent guidance she received suitable dietary advice, and Nutricia drinks were prescribed to give her extra support. She helped us a great deal with what my mother could best eat to gain some weight back and get stronger. Fortunately things are better now and she has regained some weight and strength. What I also really appreciate is that the dietitian regularly asks how things are going and stays involved. We experienced the guidance as very pleasant and personal. Highly recommended!
