Does this sound familiar?
After a heart attack, with narrowed arteries or an increased risk, you want to do everything you can to keep your heart healthy. Food is one of the most powerful tools you have in your own hands.
Who is this guidance for?
If you recognise yourself in one or more of these situations, a dietitian is a logical next step. Not sure? A single question by e-mail is answered free of charge.
- You have had a heart attack, angioplasty (stent) or bypass and want to help prevent a recurrence
- You have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease because of blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes or overweight
- You have heart failure, atrial fibrillation or peripheral artery disease and want to know what food can do
- Your GP (huisarts) or cardiologist has referred you within the CVRM care network
- You want to keep up your healthy eating pattern after cardiac rehabilitation
What we do
- A heart-healthy eating pattern made for you, based on the latest guidelines
- Attention to salt, fats, fibre and weight
- Support within the CVRM integrated care network, covered with no deductible
- Collaboration with your GP and practice nurse
How nutrition helps with cardiovascular disease
Cardiovascular disease usually develops through atherosclerosis: a slow build-up of fat and calcium in the artery wall. Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, smoking and exercise together determine how fast that happens. Food affects almost all of those factors, which is why dietary advice is a standard part of cardiovascular risk management (CVRM) under the Dutch GP guideline (NHG-Standaard).
A heart-healthy eating pattern resembles the Dutch Wheel of Five and the Mediterranean diet: plenty of vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, pulses, nuts and fish, little salt, less saturated fat and limited alcohol. We translate those guidelines into your own cuisine, whether that is Dutch, Surinamese, Turkish, Moroccan or any other, and into what is practical with your work and family.
Within the integrated care network (ketenzorg) via ROHA we work together with your GP and practice nurse (praktijkondersteuner). Your blood pressure, cholesterol and weight are then monitored together, and the dietary advice fits with your medication, such as statins or blood pressure medication.
What to expect from your programme
The aim is an eating pattern that has a favourable effect on your risk factors and that you can keep up for years. Blood pressure and cholesterol respond noticeably to diet in many people; exactly how much differs per person and is measured by your GP. We track weight and body fat percentage at every review, and circumferences where useful.
We make no promises about kilos or timelines. What we do is measure the same way at every evaluation, so you see your progress in black and white.

Is a dietitian for cardiovascular disease covered?
Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. With supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more sessions. If you are over 18, your deductible (eigen risico) applies, except within an integrated care network (ketenzorg). We are contracted with all Dutch health insurers and bill them directly, so you receive no invoice.
If your care falls under integrated care (ketenzorg, for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk or COPD), dietary advice is fully covered by the basic package and your deductible (eigen risico) is not touched. Your GP (huisarts) arranges the referral for this.
Dietitian without a referral letter
For dietary advice you do not need a referral from your GP (huisarts): you sign up directly online and we get in touch within one working day. Only if you want to be guided within integrated care (ketenzorg), so that your deductible is not touched, does your GP request a referral. Where useful, we always coordinate with your GP or specialist.
Frequently asked questions about cardiovascular disease
Do I have to cut out salt completely?
Less salt almost always helps, but your food doesn't have to become bland. We show you how to keep eating well using herbs, spices and smart choices.
Is a dietitian for heart disease covered by Dutch health insurance?
Yes. Within the CVRM integrated care network (ketenzorg) via your GP, dietary advice is fully covered by the basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no deductible (eigen risico). Outside the care network the standard cover of three hours per year applies, with no referral letter needed.
Do I need a referral?
Only for support within the integrated care network (ketenzorg), so that your deductible (eigen risico) is not charged. Ask your GP (huisarts) for a referral to the dietitian within CVRM. Outside the care network you can register directly.
Can I continue with you after cardiac rehabilitation?
Yes. Many people want to keep up their new eating pattern in everyday life after rehabilitation. We build on the hospital's advice and coordinate with your cardiologist or GP where needed.
Can I see a dietitian online in the Netherlands?
Yes. Online video consultations are covered in exactly the same way as an appointment at one of our locations, wherever you live in the Netherlands. You can also mix and match: the intake in Amsterdam or Almere, for example, and the follow-up sessions from home. Let us know your preference when you register.
