Does this sound familiar?
Training hard but not seeing the results? Often the difference is not in your programme but on your plate. Too little protein, poorly timed carbohydrates or too low an energy intake hold back your performance and recovery.
Who is this guidance for?
If you recognise yourself in one or more of these situations, a dietitian is a logical next step. Not sure? A single question by e-mail is answered free of charge.
- You train several times a week and want to get more out of your training
- You are preparing for a match, marathon, tournament or season
- You want to build muscle mass or lose fat mass while keeping your strength
- You are often tired, prone to injury or slow to recover after training
- You have a chronic condition such as diabetes and want to exercise safely
- You are a youth player or talent in a football or sports academy and want nutrition that supports both growth and performance
- You are a coach, team or club looking for sports nutrition support for a squad
What we do
- An individual nutrition plan tailored to your training schedule, duration and intensity
- Match and tournament planning: what to eat before, during and after exercise
- Support for youth talent, teams and clubs, including workshops at the club
- Body composition measurement (weight, body fat percentage and circumferences where useful)
- Advice on protein, timing, supplements and sports drinks
- Guidance by a sports dietitian with a postgraduate (post-hbo) qualification in sports nutrition, SCAS-certified and also an NSCA personal trainer
How sports nutrition works
Sports nutrition comes down to three questions: are you taking in enough energy for what you train, is the balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat matched to your goal, and are you eating at the right moments around your training? Too low an energy intake is one of the most common causes of plateaus, fatigue and injuries, including in athletes who are actually trying to lose weight.
At the intake we measure your body composition and go through your training schedule and eating pattern. We then calculate how much energy, protein and carbohydrate you need and translate that into concrete meals, snacks and what to eat before, during and after training. We only recommend supplements when there is a demonstrable need, and then specifically.
Our sports dietitian has completed the postgraduate (post-hbo) course in sports nutrition, is SCAS-certified, a member of the Dutch Association of Sports Dietitians (Vereniging Sportdiëtetiek Nederland) and also an NSCA-certified personal trainer, so nutrition and training are looked at together. We support elite athletes, young footballers and other youth talent in academies, and recreational athletes, in Amsterdam, Almere or online.
For young athletes we always look at growth and development first: a growing body needs more energy and nutrients than an adult body, and that sometimes clashes with training goals or weight classes. That is why with young athletes we work together with parents and, where needed, with the coach or the club. Up to the age of 18, the support is also free of any deductible (eigen risico).
What to expect from your programme
The aim is for your nutrition to support your training instead of holding it back: better recovery, more energy while you exercise and a body composition that fits your goal. We measure weight and body fat percentage at every review (and circumferences where useful), so you can see what is changing and we can adjust the plan to your season.
We make no promises about kilos or timelines. What we do is measure the same way at every evaluation, so you see your progress in black and white.

Is a dietitian for sports nutrition covered?
Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. With supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more sessions. If you are over 18, your deductible (eigen risico) applies, except within an integrated care network (ketenzorg). We are contracted with all Dutch health insurers and bill them directly, so you receive no invoice.
Dietitian without a referral letter
For dietary advice you do not need a referral from your GP (huisarts): you sign up directly online and we get in touch within one working day. Only if you want to be guided within integrated care (ketenzorg), so that your deductible is not touched, does your GP request a referral. Where useful, we always coordinate with your GP or specialist.
Frequently asked questions about sports nutrition
Do I need supplements?
Usually fewer than you think. We look at your everyday diet first; only when there is a real, demonstrable need do we recommend a specific supplement.
How much protein do I need to build muscle?
That depends on your weight, your training goal and your training volume. We calculate it precisely for you and translate it into concrete meals.
Is a sports dietitian covered by Dutch health insurance?
Yes. Sports nutrition advice also counts as dietary advice: three hours per calendar year from the basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. With supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more hours.
Do you also work with recreational athletes?
Absolutely. From someone who goes to the gym twice a week to elite athletes: the approach is the same, only the numbers differ.
Do you also support young athletes and youth footballers?
Yes. We support youth talent in football and sports academies, together with parents and, where wanted, the coach. For athletes under 18 no deductible (eigen risico) applies: three hours per year from the basic health insurance, with no referral letter needed.
Can I see a dietitian online in the Netherlands?
Yes. Online video consultations are covered in exactly the same way as an appointment at one of our locations, wherever you live in the Netherlands. You can also mix and match: the intake in Amsterdam or Almere, for example, and the follow-up sessions from home. Let us know your preference when you register.
