Weight & metabolic health · Amsterdam and Almere · no referral needed

Does this sound familiar?
Bariatric surgery is a big step. Before the operation your eating pattern often has to change already, and after the operation everything changes: portion size, nutrients, supplements. Good support prevents deficiencies and complaints.
Who is this guidance for?
If you recognise yourself in one or more of these situations, a dietitian is a logical next step. Not sure? A single question by e-mail is answered free of charge.
- You are on the waiting list for a gastric bypass or gastric sleeve and want to prepare well
- You have had the operation and want support building up from liquid to solid food
- You have complaints after surgery such as dumping syndrome, nausea or constipation
- You have regained weight some years after surgery, or notice deficiencies
- You are looking for support close to home, in addition to your bariatric centre
What we do
- Preparation for the operation, together with your treatment team
- Step-by-step food plans after the operation
- Prevention of deficiencies (protein, vitamins, minerals)
- Long-term support for a lasting result
Nutrition before and after bariatric surgery
In bariatric surgery, such as a gastric bypass or gastric sleeve, the stomach is made smaller and sometimes part of the intestine is bypassed. As a result you can eat less and your body absorbs certain nutrients less well. After the operation, nutrition is not a side issue but the core of the treatment: it determines whether you recover, keep your muscle mass and avoid deficiencies.
Before the operation we help you with an eating pattern that prepares your body and, where the hospital requires it, with a pre-operative diet. After the operation we guide the build-up from liquid to puréed to solid food, teach you to eat small, protein-rich portions and keep an eye on fluids, vitamins and minerals. Lifelong supplementation of, among others, vitamin B12, iron, calcium and vitamin D is part of the aftercare.
We work alongside your bariatric centre and coordinate with your surgeon, internist or GP (huisarts). That way you still have a dietitian close to home, in Amsterdam or Almere, or online, once the hospital's standard aftercare has ended.
What to expect from your programme
The aim is a safe recovery after the operation, maintaining muscle mass while you lose weight, and preventing deficiencies and complaints in the long term. How much weight you eventually lose differs from person to person and from operation to operation. We measure weight and body fat percentage at every review (and circumferences where useful) and go through your lab results with you.
We make no promises about kilos or timelines. What we do is measure the same way at every evaluation, so you see your progress in black and white.

Is a dietitian for bariatric surgery covered?
Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. With supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more sessions. If you are over 18, your deductible (eigen risico) applies, except within an integrated care network (ketenzorg). We are contracted with all Dutch health insurers and bill them directly, so you receive no invoice.
Dietitian without a referral letter
For dietary advice you do not need a referral from your GP (huisarts): you sign up directly online and we get in touch within one working day. Only if you want to be guided within integrated care (ketenzorg), so that your deductible is not touched, does your GP request a referral. Where useful, we always coordinate with your GP or specialist.
Frequently asked questions about bariatric surgery
How long does support after bariatric surgery last?
Usually at least a year. That is precisely the period in which your body learns to cope with the new situation, and professional support matters most.
Is dietary support around bariatric surgery covered by Dutch health insurance?
Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. With supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more hours. The hospital's own aftercare programme is separate from this.
Can I see you alongside my bariatric centre?
Yes. Many clients combine the hospital's aftercare with support close to home. Where needed we coordinate with your treatment team, so that the advice lines up.
Which supplements do I need after a gastric bypass or sleeve?
After bariatric surgery, lifelong supplementation is needed, including vitamin B12, iron, calcium and vitamin D, often as a specialised multivitamin. Exactly what you need depends on the type of operation and your blood results; we discuss that with your doctor.
Can I see a dietitian online in the Netherlands?
Yes. Online video consultations are covered in exactly the same way as an appointment at one of our locations, wherever you live in the Netherlands. You can also mix and match: the intake in Amsterdam or Almere, for example, and the follow-up sessions from home. Let us know your preference when you register.
