Does this sound familiar?
High blood pressure is one of the biggest risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke. Food, especially salt, weight and alcohol, has a direct effect on it.
Who is this guidance for?
If you recognise yourself in one or more of these situations, a dietitian is a logical next step. Not sure? A single question by e-mail is answered free of charge.
- Your GP (huisarts) has measured raised blood pressure and advises lifestyle changes
- You take blood pressure medication and want to support its effect through food
- You also have overweight, diabetes or high cholesterol
- You want to know how to cook tasty food with less salt, in your own cuisine too
- You have been referred within the CVRM care network
What we do
- Practical advice to cut down on salt without losing flavour
- An eating pattern inspired by proven approaches such as DASH
- Support with weight loss if that helps your blood pressure
How nutrition helps with high blood pressure
Blood pressure is the pressure in your arteries. If it stays too high for a long time, it damages the blood vessel walls, heart, kidneys and brain. Salt plays a big part in this: sodium retains fluid and so raises the pressure. Most salt is not in the salt shaker but in bread, cheese, processed meats, sauces, soups and ready meals.
The DASH eating pattern, with plenty of vegetables, fruit, wholegrain products, low-fat dairy and little salt, has been studied extensively and lowers blood pressure in many people. Potassium from vegetables and fruit, less alcohol, more exercise and a healthier weight also contribute. We translate that into your shopping and your recipes, with attention to your food culture.
Within the CVRM integrated care network (ketenzorg) via ROHA we monitor your blood pressure together with your GP and practice nurse (praktijkondersteuner), so that diet and medication work together.
What to expect from your programme
The aim is lower blood pressure and an eating pattern with less salt that doesn't feel like a sacrifice. The effect differs from person to person and is measured by your GP or with a home monitor. If you are overweight we also track your weight at every review, and circumferences where useful.
We make no promises about kilos or timelines. What we do is measure the same way at every evaluation, so you see your progress in black and white.

Is a dietitian for high blood pressure covered?
Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. With supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more sessions. If you are over 18, your deductible (eigen risico) applies, except within an integrated care network (ketenzorg). We are contracted with all Dutch health insurers and bill them directly, so you receive no invoice.
If your care falls under integrated care (ketenzorg, for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk or COPD), dietary advice is fully covered by the basic package and your deductible (eigen risico) is not touched. Your GP (huisarts) arranges the referral for this.
Dietitian without a referral letter
For dietary advice you do not need a referral from your GP (huisarts): you sign up directly online and we get in touch within one working day. Only if you want to be guided within integrated care (ketenzorg), so that your deductible is not touched, does your GP request a referral. Where useful, we always coordinate with your GP or specialist.
Frequently asked questions about high blood pressure
Where is most of the salt in my diet?
Around 80 per cent of the salt we consume is already in products: bread, cheese, sauces and ready meals. We teach you what to look out for.
Is a dietitian for high blood pressure covered by Dutch health insurance?
Yes. Three hours of dietary advice per calendar year are covered by the basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. Within the CVRM integrated care network (ketenzorg) via your GP, the support is fully covered with no deductible (eigen risico).
Can I reduce my blood pressure medication through diet?
Sometimes a doctor can adjust the dose if lifestyle changes bring your blood pressure down clearly. That is always decided together with your GP; never stop medication on your own.
How long does the support last?
Usually an intake and a few follow-up sessions spread over three to six months, so that new habits have time to settle in. That fits within the covered hours.
Can I see a dietitian online in the Netherlands?
Yes. Online video consultations are covered in exactly the same way as an appointment at one of our locations, wherever you live in the Netherlands. You can also mix and match: the intake in Amsterdam or Almere, for example, and the follow-up sessions from home. Let us know your preference when you register.
