Does this sound familiar?

You can't feel high cholesterol, but it quietly raises your risk of cardiovascular disease. With the right food you can improve your readings considerably, sometimes even without medication or with less of it.

Who is this guidance for?

If you recognise yourself in one or more of these situations, a dietitian is a logical next step. Not sure? A single question by e-mail is answered free of charge.

  • Your GP (huisarts) has measured a raised LDL or total cholesterol
  • You want to try diet first before starting a statin, in consultation with your doctor
  • You already take cholesterol-lowering medication and want to support its effect through food
  • Familial hypercholesterolaemia runs in your family
  • You also have high blood pressure, diabetes or overweight

What we do

  • Analysis of your eating pattern, focused on saturated fat, fibre and plant sterols
  • A concrete weekly menu with foods that lower your cholesterol
  • Measurable goals, alongside the readings from your GP or specialist

How nutrition helps with high cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance your body needs, but LDL cholesterol that is too high contributes to atherosclerosis. Your liver makes most of it itself; food mainly influences how much is produced and absorbed. Saturated fat from fatty meat, full-fat dairy, butter, coconut oil and biscuits raises LDL; unsaturated fat from oils, nuts and fish, and fibre from wholegrains, pulses, vegetables and fruit lower it.

During the programme we translate that into your daily choices: what to put on your bread, which oil to use, how often to eat fish, what to do about cheese and cake. Foods with plant sterols can help in addition. The effect of diet differs from person to person and also depends on genetics; that is why we go through your GP's lab results at every review.

With a strongly increased risk or familial hypercholesterolaemia, medication often remains necessary. Diet still pays off then, because it lowers your overall risk. Decisions about medication are always made together with your doctor.

What to expect from your programme

The aim is lower LDL cholesterol and an eating pattern you can keep up without effort. How much your cholesterol drops differs from person to person; we track it together with the blood results from your GP. If you are overweight, weight loss contributes extra, and we measure that at every review too.

We make no promises about kilos or timelines. What we do is measure the same way at every evaluation, so you see your progress in black and white.

Is a dietitian for high cholesterol covered?

Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. With supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more sessions. If you are over 18, your deductible (eigen risico) applies, except within an integrated care network (ketenzorg). We are contracted with all Dutch health insurers and bill them directly, so you receive no invoice.

If your care falls under integrated care (ketenzorg, for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk or COPD), dietary advice is fully covered by the basic package and your deductible (eigen risico) is not touched. Your GP (huisarts) arranges the referral for this.

Everything about cover, deductible and fees

Dietitian without a referral letter

For dietary advice you do not need a referral from your GP (huisarts): you sign up directly online and we get in touch within one working day. Only if you want to be guided within integrated care (ketenzorg), so that your deductible is not touched, does your GP request a referral. Where useful, we always coordinate with your GP or specialist.

Frequently asked questions about high cholesterol

How much can diet lower my cholesterol?

With a targeted eating pattern, LDL cholesterol can drop noticeably. Exactly how much differs from person to person and also depends on genetics; we track the effect through the blood results from your GP.

Is a dietitian for high cholesterol covered by Dutch health insurance?

Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. If you fall under the CVRM integrated care network (ketenzorg) via your GP, the support is fully covered without any deductible (eigen risico).

Can I stop my statin if my cholesterol drops?

That is always decided together with your doctor. Diet can support the effect of medication and sometimes influence the dose, but with a high risk medication often remains necessary.

How quickly will I see a change in my readings?

After roughly six to twelve weeks of consistently eating differently, a difference in blood results is usually measurable. Your GP decides when a new test is worthwhile.

Can I see a dietitian online in the Netherlands?

Yes. Online video consultations are covered in exactly the same way as an appointment at one of our locations, wherever you live in the Netherlands. You can also mix and match: the intake in Amsterdam or Almere, for example, and the follow-up sessions from home. Let us know your preference when you register.
