Does this sound familiar?

Your body is changing, your energy needs are shifting and your baby is growing every day. But what is really healthy during pregnancy? And how do you deal with nausea, cravings or doubts about what is safe?

Who is this guidance for?

If you recognise yourself in one or more of these situations, a dietitian is a logical next step. Not sure? A single question by e-mail is answered free of charge.

  • You are pregnant and want to be sure you and your baby are getting everything you need
  • You are trying to conceive and want to prepare your body well
  • You suffer from nausea, constipation, heartburn or strong cravings
  • You are gaining weight faster, or more slowly, than your midwife expects
  • You are breastfeeding and want to know what you yourself need

What we do

  • Advice on what you can and cannot eat during pregnancy
  • Help with nausea, constipation, weight gain and cravings
  • Advice on the supplements you really need
  • Support after the birth, including while breastfeeding

How nutrition helps with pregnancy

During pregnancy you need more of certain nutrients, such as folic acid, iron, calcium, iodine and vitamin D, while your energy needs rise only modestly. Some foods are also best avoided because of the risk of listeria or toxoplasmosis, such as raw fish, raw-milk cheese and processed meats that have not been properly heated. We set out clearly what is and isn't fine, in your own cuisine.

Many pregnancy complaints can be eased with food: small, frequent meals for nausea, fibre and fluids for constipation, smaller portions and less fat for heartburn. Healthy weight gain also gets attention, because gaining too much or too little can have consequences for you and your baby. We follow the guidelines of the Netherlands Nutrition Centre (Voedingscentrum) and coordinate with your midwife or gynaecologist.

After the birth your needs change again, especially if you are breastfeeding. We help you with an eating pattern that fits a busy period with little sleep and, if you want, with a gradual return to your previous weight.

What to expect from your programme

The aim is for you to eat with confidence during your pregnancy: you know what is safe, your complaints are easier to manage and your weight gain is healthy. What is healthy differs from person to person and from pregnancy to pregnancy, which is why we coordinate with your midwife. After the birth, you set the pace.

We make no promises about kilos or timelines. What we do is measure the same way at every evaluation, so you see your progress in black and white.

Is a dietitian for pregnancy covered?

Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering), with no referral letter needed. With supplementary insurance you are often entitled to more sessions. If you are over 18, your deductible (eigen risico) applies, except within an integrated care network (ketenzorg). We are contracted with all Dutch health insurers and bill them directly, so you receive no invoice.

Everything about cover, deductible and fees

Dietitian without a referral letter

For dietary advice you do not need a referral from your GP (huisarts): you sign up directly online and we get in touch within one working day. Only if you want to be guided within integrated care (ketenzorg), so that your deductible is not touched, does your GP request a referral. Where useful, we always coordinate with your GP or specialist.

Frequently asked questions about pregnancy

How much extra do I need to eat when pregnant?

Less than the saying 'eating for two' suggests. In the third trimester the extra need is about one healthy snack a day.

Is a dietitian during pregnancy covered by Dutch health insurance?

Yes. Dietary advice is covered for three hours per calendar year under the basic health insurance (basisverzekering), without a referral letter and with every Dutch insurer. If you are over 18, your deductible (eigen risico) applies.

Which supplements do I need during pregnancy?

Folic acid from the moment you start trying to conceive up to and including week ten, and vitamin D throughout the whole pregnancy. Other supplements only when there is a proven need, for example iron for anaemia, in consultation with your midwife.

Can I also see you after the birth?

Yes. We support you after the birth too, for example with breastfeeding or with gradually returning to your pre-pregnancy weight. That can be at our practice, at home or online.

Can I see a dietitian online in the Netherlands?

Yes. Online video consultations are covered in exactly the same way as an appointment at one of our locations, wherever you live in the Netherlands. You can also mix and match: the intake in Amsterdam or Almere, for example, and the follow-up sessions from home. Let us know your preference when you register.
